The ‘Dancing with the Stars’ Winner Is…

Hines Ward and Kym Johnson are the winners of “Dancing with the Stars” Season 12!

The crowd, containing the pro football player’s mom, erupted at the news of Ward’s triumph.

Kirstie Alley and Maksim Chmerkovskiy came in second place, while Chelsea Kane and Mark Ballas landed in third.

Gossip Cop will have video later.

Do you think the right pair won?

'Dancing With the Stars' Winner: Who Won the Season 11 Finale?

Three dancers entered the stage, but only one left with the mirrorball trophy in hand. Who was crowned the 'Dancing With the Stars' winner for season 11? Was it Bristol, Jennifer or Kyle?

A season filled with of twists, turns and shocking eliminations ended predictably, with actress Jennifer Grey and partner Derek Hough landing in first place. Grey topped the leaderboard for seven of the competition's 10 weeks.

Actor Kyle Massey and Lacey Schwimmer finished second.

"I didn't think I was going to compete tonight, and I'm really glad I did," said a tearful Grey, who battled back problems all season. A ruptured disc nearly prevented her from performing in the finale.

And after generating so much controversy -- causing one enraged viewer to shoot his television, possibly being the target of white (talcum) powder and eliciting hundreds of vitriolic comments on our own site-- teen activist Bristol Palin and partner Mark Ballas took third place.

"This has been such a life-changing experience and I had the time of my life," Palin said.

Dancing With the Stars winner Jennifer GreyHough, meanwhile, can now boast of being a three-time champion (having previously won with Nicole Scherzinger and Brooke Burke.) "I'm unbelievably proud," Hough told co-host Brooke Burke just before learning of the results. "It's been such an honor and a privilege and just a pleasure to dance with Jennifer. It's been an incredible journey and one that I'll never forget."

The finalists performed twice more during the finale episode to add to their scores from Monday night's performances. Each celeb reprised a dance from earlier in the season: Palin picked her well-received tango, Massey chose his "rock week" tango, while Grey went with her week 1 homage to 'Dirty Dancing.' The judges placed them in that order, from third to first.

The three couples also did an "instant cha cha," with Grey and Hough again coming out on top. The final scoreboard read: Grey with 118, Massey with 110 and Palin with 104.

Which means that despite all those voting conspiracy theories, the end result mirrored the scores given out by Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli.

Jennifer GreyGrey ruptured a disc in her back Monday night, but told a local ABC affiliate after winning that she "couldn't bear the idea of not finishing what we started.

As for how she felt when her named was called? "I think I was a little blank," Grey laughed. "I felt a shot of elation."

Casey Anthony Trial

Final preparations are under way today for Casey Anthony’s first-degree murder trial, which will begin unfolding Tuesday morning at the Orange County Courthouse.

Nearly three years after Anthony’s 2-year-old daughter Caylee Marie was reported missing — and the young, single mother and her toddler became national news — attorneys will deliver their opening statements shortly after court is in session at 9 a.m.

The panel that will decide Anthony’s fate is comprised of Pinellas County residents, who were chosen over a painstaking 11-day period in Clearwater. They were sworn in early Friday evening.

It’s unclear if the jury has arrived in Orlando yet. They’ll be sequestered for the duration of the trial, which is expected to last six to eight weeks.

Last week, Orange-Osceola Chief Judge Belvin Perry told Anthony’s defense team and state prosecutors he would be available to tie up any loose ends today, though it’s unclear if any last-minute hearing has been scheduled.

Anthony, 25, is accused of killing Caylee in the summer of 2008. The toddler’s remains were found several months later in woods near her family’s east Orange County home.

Perry decided to hold jury selection in Pinellas County because of the pretrial publicity surrounding the case.

More than 500 members of the media applied for credentials to cover the trial. Courtroom seating is assigned for reporters.

The proceedings are open to the public, though access will be limited to pass-holders and there are restrictions.

Each morning during the trial, court officials will hand out seating passes on a first-come, first-served basis to people who line up on the north side of the courthouse. People can line up beginning at 5:30 a.m.

Each pass, which is free, is dated and assigned a seat number. The pass is good for one day and cannot be sold. They will be reissued at 1 p.m. for any seats vacated after the lunch break.

The trial will be held in a large courtroom on the 23rd floor of the courthouse, and the general public will be prohibited from accessing that floor. Only credential media, legal teams associated with the Anthony case and people with seating passes will be allowed on the 23rd floor.

Line Rider 2: Unbound

The deceptively simple Line Rider started as a free Flash game. It was able to move beyond restrictions, such as not having a tangible goal or even the ability to save your hard-earned work, and ensnared a community of creatively inclined ski artists. Unbound, the first retail release of the series, has kept the simple design from the original while adding more track options, a full Story mode, and community features to share all of your work. Patience is still the key to both making your way through the maddening puzzles, as well as crafting your own zany designs to torment the community. The trial-and-error gameplay can be exhausting at times, but the overwhelming sense of accomplishment for finally figuring out a particularly difficult track makes it well worth the initial struggles.

Line Rider 2: Unbound is a 2D racing/puzzle hybrid. Your job is to guide an adventurous little boy on a sled through a series of increasingly complex courses. You have no direct control over the daredevil, though. Rather, you have to fill in missing pieces of the track to get him safely to the finish line, battling physics and gravity all the while. The learning curve is crushingly steep in the early going, especially if you never tooled around with the original game. You are placed in a course then told to collect coins and finish the level, but there is little explanation on how to accomplish this feat. It will take a lot of experimentation before the mechanics click, but once they do, you’ll be happily curving lines to fling riders to seemingly unreachable paths or through dizzying loop-the-loops.

The Story mode is where novice riders will need to get their feet wet before jumping into the more complex creation tools. The tracks are already constructed for you, only with key pieces removed. In these specific sections, you can lay down different track types to keep your rider moving. The normal line lets gravity do its work, acceleration or slowdown lines directly affect your rider’s momentum, and breakable lines disappear after you touch them. You can manually draw your own lines if you want, but you’ll have a lot more success just bending straight lines with the curving tool. Unfortunately, bending lines can be frustrating on the DS. The touch screen doesn’t always register your inputs, so you’ll often have to erase your line and start over instead of simply tweaking your work.

The open-ended nature of the puzzles gives rise to some crafty solutions, but it also puts far too much emphasis on trial and error. The physics system can be overly sensitive, causing you to fly wildly with every little bump in the road. Because of this, puzzle-solving usually involves drawing a basic line and then repeatedly tweaking it until you pass that particular stretch of terrain. Because there are no rules for how you get your rider across the finish line, it makes it extremely rewarding to pull off an insane flip or land a death-defying jump. However, it can be frustrating performing minute alterations to your lines until you figure out the exact trajectory you need to make it across a bottomless pit. This problem is compounded in later levels when a second rider is thrown in, making you constantly switch between segments of the track as you try to coordinate a flawless run through insane levels.

If you grow tired of trying to solve the sometimes exhausting premade levels, you can design you own to impress an entire community of line riders. The editing tool is incredibly deep, letting you piece together whatever sadistic sled-riding designs you can imagine. You’ll have to actually solve your own puzzle before you can upload it to the community Web site, which will mercifully save someone from downloading and fruitlessly trying to solve an impossible course. In fact, most of the value for this package comes from this feature. The original browser game was a simple creation tool that ate up hours of people’s time. With more track types and the ability to share your work, this should keep slope aficionados busy for a long time.

The visuals in Unbound are as simple as the gameplay, but they satisfy in surprising ways. Despite the cartoony aesthetic, the impact from a particularly nasty wreck is extremely gratifying. Riders exhibit a surprising amount of pain when they slam into walls and flip head over heels through a loop, which produces joy even when you’re struggling to solve a puzzle. The physics are also quite impressive; your rider will react to every bump in the road, quick change of speed, and ramp to nowhere with surprising realism. Though the trial-and-error nature of the puzzles is never eliminated, once you fully understand how your rider will react to obstacles, it makes the experience more predictable and rewarding.

It’s hard to escape from Line Riders 2: Unbound’s grip once it seizes hold of you. This simple puzzle game packs a surprising amount of depth, making hours fly by as you desperately try to pass a tricky course or baffle your friends with a crazy concoction of your own. The PC version is slightly better than its DS counterpart because the latter suffers from control quirks, but the experiences are largely the same. It’s a shame most puzzles rely on sheer perseverance instead of skillful line placement, though, and the learning curve is far too steep in the early stages. If you have the patience to learn the subtleties of sled-track design, there is a lot of value in this little package.

Green Line rider charged with assault and battery with a dangerous umbrella

MBTA Transit Police report arresting a woman Sunday afternoon on charges she escalated an argument on a C trolley by smacking one opponent in the back of the head with her umbrella and then smacking another by opening the umbrella up in her face.

Isoline Peart-Smith, 21, was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and resisting arrest following the 2:30 p.m. incident on an outbound C trolley by St. Mary Street, according to a police report.

According to the report, Peart-Smith hit the one of the women in the back of the head twice with her multi-colored umbrella and then turned her attention to the other woman with whom she was arguing "by hitting the button on the handle and expanding it."

The report adds "the umbrella was secured and submitted into evidence," but does not say what the argument was about.

Innocent, etc.

Nats Farm Report Week Ending May 22

Pitching Report -

Ross Detwiler: Detwiler turned in his fourth consecutive start giving up four runs or more on Thursday night, going five innings with five hits, four earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts against Norfolk. It’s now been just about a month since his last “good” start, an April 25th start in which he gave up just one run over 6 1/3 innings. His ERA stands at 5.04 on the year, but he's still striking out two for every one walk. He needs to turn it around quickly though to avoid being passed over by other prospects.

Brad Meyers: Three starts into his AAA career, the 25-year-old Meyers has a 3.63 ERA (seven ER in 17 1/3 IP) and 16 strikeouts to just one walk. His last start was Friday night, and he went 5 1/3 innings, giving up three earned runs (two home runs) on seven hits with three strikeouts and no walks. His control is still very good and as continues to be a candidate for the bigs if injury or attrition call for it.

Yunesky Maya: Maya has continued to pitch himself to the top of the Nats’ call-up list (likely) in Syracuse, throwing 51 2/3 innings so far with a 3.66 ERA. In his last start Wednesday night, he threw 6 1/3 innings, giving up three earned on four hits, one walk and two strikeouts. He’s not striking may batters out, but he’s getting outs consistently and appears to be much more comfortable this year.

Tom Milone: His best start of the season came Saturday, as he threw seven shutout innings against Rochester, giving up just three hits and racking up nine strikeouts. Milone has given up more than three earned runs in just one out of his seven AAA starts. His strikeout to walk ratio is an incredible 44/3 in 43 1/3 innings.

Josh Wilkie: In 2 1/3 innings this week, Wilkie gave up four hits and one earned run, striking out four. His ERA still stands at 1.83 on the year, though he has been hit harder in May (11 hits against in eight innings).

Craig Stammen: Sometimes forgotten because of other, younger pitchers, Stammen has still been good in AAA this season. Prior to Sunday’s start, Stammen had a 3.43 ERA and 38 strikeouts to just five walks. On Tuesday he gave up three runs in six innings, and on Sunday, he gave up seven hits, four walks and three runs over five innings in the Chiefs’ 9-3 victory.

Hitting Report –

Chris Marrero: He had a big day Sunday afternoon, going 3-for-4 with a home run, four RBI and a walk, raising his overall average to .283. He’s smashing the ball right now, hitting .351 in his last ten games heading into Sunday’s game. He’s not hitting for a whole lot of power, but he’s getting on base and with Adam LaRoche seeking medical advice for his ailing left shoulder, Marrero needs to give the major league team a reason to believe he could be an option.

Jesus Flores: Flores hasn’t hit well this year, and he’s hitting just .229/.363/.343 in his last 10, though he did homer – his second of the year – on Sunday afternoon.

Corey Brown: Brown went just 2-for-14 this week, but he did have three walks and his overall OBP is about a hundred points higher than his average. He’s not hitting well, but he’s drawing walks (nine walks to seven strikeouts in his last 10 games).

Michael Aubrey: Aubrey isn’t considered a prospect, but with LaRoche possibly going to the DL, he may become an option for the major league team. The 29-year-old went 3-for-5 on Sunday afternoon, and is hitting .400/.488/.914 in his last 10 games. This week, he went 8-for-22 (.363) with five walks, one home run and six RBIs. His last time in the major leagues was in 2009 with Baltimore, where he hit .289/.326/.500 in 90 at bats. He maybe getting hot at the right time.

Harrisburg Senators, AA Eastern League (20-19)

Pitching Report –

Brad Peacock: He dazzled again this week, this time tossing six innings of one run ball while give up one hit (a home run) and two walks with 10 strikeouts. He’s given up more than two runs in just one start this year, and his ERA stands at 2.05. Opponents are hitting .180 off of him.

Oliver Perez: The Nationals acitvated Perez from extended spring training and assigned him to Harrisburg. He made his first appearance of the season Thursday, starting against New Britain. Perez went five innings and gave up one run on one hit and two walks, striking out three in a 3-1 win.

Hitting Report –

Stephen Lombardozzi: He’s struggled in his last 10 games, especially when it comes to plate discipline, which has always been his strength. He’s struck out 11 times to just one walk in his last 10 games and is hitting .222 in those games (.282/.344/.436 on the year).

Derek Norris: He seems to have finally adjusted to AA hitting, hitting .324 in his last 10 games. He’s riding a six-game hitting streak right now in which he’s 9-for-21 (.428) with four doubles, a home run, three RBIs, four walks and three strikeouts. He’s on fire right now, and his triple slash line is up to .222/.374/.375.

Tyler Moore: He’s hitting a paltry .167/.186/.357 in his last 10 games, and is just one for his last 16 at bats. His strikeout to walk ratio stands at 40 strikeouts to four walks, and his average on the year is at .255 with five homers and 15 RBIs. He may be getting exposed at the higher level after such a torrid summer with Potomac in 2010.
Potomac Nationals, High-A Carolina League (19-23)

Pitching Report –

Daniel Rosenbaum: His start Thursday was a disaster, giving up six runs over five innings against Frederick. His ERA is still just 3.12, and the 23-year-old has been good the rest of the year, so it may just be a bad start.

Josh Smoker: He isn’t getting a whole lot of work, but in 1 2/3 innings this week, he allowed no runs, one hit, two walks, and struck out two. His season ERA is at 1.23. The adjustment to reliever continues to be a success and we’ll see if he can continue to pitch well in his new role.

Cameron Selik: Selik hasn’t pitched since May 13.

Hitting Report –

Eury Perez: Perez is absolutely raking right now, hitting .463 (19-for-41) in his last 10 games with six runs, one home run, 10 RBIs and four steals. He has 15 SB to just 2 CS on the year, and while he’s not drawing many walks, he doesn’t strike out much either (just 12 in 92 at bats), and his speed is absolutely lethal. He went 1-for-4 on Sunday and has a nine-game hitting streak, with six of those games multi-hit games.

Destin Hood: Hood is also red-hot with a five-game hitting streak – and all of those games are multi-hit games. He’s 13 for his last 22, with five runs scored, eight doubles (three on Sunday), one home run and nine RBIs. He’s just 21 years old, and has built off his strong 2010 campaign in which he hit .285 with five HR, 30 doubles, and 65 RBI.

Steven Souza: The 22-year old first baseman leads the P-Nats in RBIs with 32 and has shown good power in his last ten games, hitting three home runs and driving in 10. He's hitting .248/.323/.504 for the year with eight homers and 32 RBI with 12 steals to boot.

Hagerstown Suns, Low-A South Atlantic League (27-16)

Pitching Report –

Robbie Ray: Ray has been spectacular in his first three minor league starts, and in his most recent on Friday he pitched six innings, giving up one earned run with four strikeouts. He’s not yet 20 years old, but he’s been very good out of the gate, going 1-0 with a 0.53 ERA (one earned run in 17 innings) with 17 Ks and one BB.

Taylor Jordan: He’s yet to give up more than three runs in a start this year, and his start on Monday was solid: six innings, seven hits, three earned runs, two walks, five strikeouts. His record is 6-0 and his ERA is 2.82 on the year.

A.J. Cole: Cole made one start this week, going four innings and giving up six hits and five runs (just two earned) with five strikeouts.

Hitting Report –

Bryce Harper: Harper was due to come back to earth after his hitting streak, and he was 4-for-19 (.210) this week with three walks, one home run and three RBIs. He’s still hitting .359/.440/.655 this season in Hagerstown with 13 doubles, 10 HR, 34 RBI and 21 walks to 33 strikeouts. Oh, and seven stolen bases and just two errors on the year.

David Frietas: He’s been consistent this year, and is hitting .324 in his last 10 games to raise his average to .290 – though more impressive is that he has 20 walks to 13 strikeouts and an OBP of .392. He went 2-for-5 Saturday with a home run and two RBIs and is definitely a catcher to look out for.
_____________________________________________________

PLAYERS TO WATCH FOR THE WEEK

Pitcher: Brad Peacock, Harrisburg. He’s been remarkable this year, leading the Eastern League in strikeouts and dominating AA. With the major league rotation staying healthy so far, Peacock has to have some luck to get a call-up soon, but he may get a look in September.

Hitter: Destin Hood, Potomac. He’s just absolutely raking and is hitting for power with eight doubles in his last 13 hits. The 21-year-old is very much still a good prospect, and the former two-sport high school star is looking very good so far in Potomac. If he keeps this up for another month or so, he may get a look in Harrisburg.

Sex And The City 2 Tickets Already Selling Out

satc200.jpgLOS ANGELES, California (X17online) - Sex and the City 2 doesn't open until next month, but already theaters are saying that ticket sales for the sequel are "brisk." Some theaters have already sold out for certain showings for the female flick starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon.

Industry sources reveal that SATC2 ticket sales were selling faster than this weekend's hit Kick-Ass. As for the original SATC movie, it brought in $415 million in worldwide box office, and the sequel is expected to bring in even more.

Regal Cinemas marketing boss Dick Westerling says, "Women across the country are anxious to plan events and activities related to their evening out to see the film, and they want confirmation that they have tickets. Based on our experience with the first film, this can become quite an elaborate and fun-filled evening."

Sex and the City 2 hits theaters May 27.

Lucky Peach Subscription

This is not the cover.

Lucky Peach is a new journal of food writing, published on a quarterly basis by McSweeney’s.

It is a creation of David Chang, the James Beard Award–winning chef behind the Momofuku restaurants in New York, writer Peter Meehan, and Zero Point Zero Production—producers of the Emmy Award–winning Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations.

One week ago, the Georgia Supreme Court overturned a 2008 law which established the State Charter Schools Commission. In a 4-3 vote, the court ruled that local governments have an exclusive franchise on establishing schools, and that state sponsored charter schools did not meet the definition of “special schools”, an exception laid out by the Georgia Constitution. At issue is the share of local funds collected by counties or municipal school districts which are then contributed to the charter schools on a per-pupil basis.

The future of nine existing charter schools and an additional eight expected to open this fall’s future is now unclear, affecting an estimated enrollment of 15,000 Georgia students. The charter school defendants in the case have petitioned the court for re-consideration, and the State School Superintendent has indicated he will rush through applications for each school to receive “special school” status with the state, but this would only approve state and federal funding for each school. County funds would still be unavailable to each affected school, placing the 2011-2012 school year in immediate jeopardy.

Charter schools have gained popularity in Georgia as the arguably least controversial form of school choice. Georgia has approximately 120 charter schools in existence educating over 60,000 students. The vast majority of these schools were chartered by local school boards. The Charter Schools Commission was established to review and possibly approve charter school applications that local school districts would not approve, ensuring that school choice and limited competition was available even in reluctant school districts. It was several of these districts – Bulloch, Candler, DeKalb, Griffin-Spalding, Gwinnett, and Henry – who sued claiming that the state had no right to establish schools and appropriate local tax money to them without the consent of their respective boards of education.

The long term fix is an amendment to the Georgia Constitution, which by law cannot happen prior to 2012. Thus, schools operating under a charter from the state commission may be in limbo until the 2013-2014 school year. Any attempt at a legislative band-aid would likely still be too little too late for this school year, as the legislature is not likely to be called into a special session solely for this matter, and the special session scheduled for re-apportionment is scheduled for August 15th, after many area school systems have begun classes for the year.

The court was split around newly galvanizing ideological lines, with Carol Hunstein – Chief Justice who survived a bitter electoral challenge from conservative Mike Wiggins in 2006 – writing for the majority. Newcomer David Nahmias, appointed by Governor Sonny Perdue to replace the retiring Leah Ward Sears, wrote a dissent described as “blistering” by Brian Tyson, an attorney who writes the Supreme Court of Georgia Blog. Nahmias pulled no punches in his 75 page dissent, stating “At least the local systems are respectful of the English language; the majority, searching for a way around this problem, is not.”

Those searching for an electoral advantage to elect conservative judges to the Supreme Court of Georgia may finally have found a tangible issue to wage a campaign. It should be noted, however, that even in a conservative state as red as Georgia has become, Conservatives/Republicans have had remarkably little success in pushing social conservative judicial candidates against appointed incumbent justices, regardless how “liberal” their opinions are from the bench. Prior to the Hunstein-Wiggins campaign, an attempt to unseat Leah Ward Sears, was equally unsuccessful with Republicans pushing Grant Brantley in the non-partisan race.

Republicans have found that getting justices elected is a process that is more secretive than being elevated to a 37th level Mason. The legal community seems to be able to transcend traditional politics, and bristles at the notion of elevating a justice on the platform of social conservatism over their traditional appointment after approval of a judicial nominating committee.

With that said, the appointments of Governor Perdue and presumably Nathan Deal trend to the conservative side, and time is on the side of conservatives with respect to the court. Time is not on the side of students and parents in the charter schools case. Many schools are set to resume classes in less than 90 days, with no immediate solution or relief in sight.

May 24, 2011 Christina Hendricks: Breasts ’so obviously real’

Christina Hendricks arrives at the 62nd Primetime Emmy Awards Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, in Los Angeles. (AP Photo/Chris Pizzello)
If you’ve ever gone mad wondering if voluptuous Christina Hendricks’s breasts are artificial or just the product of good genetics, the mystery is over. The “Mad Men” star explained to the Daily Mail’s You magazine that her naturally big chest has presented her with clothing challenges, but has given her something to be happy about.

“If there’s anything to be learned from me it’s that I’m learning to celebrate what I was born with, even though it’s sometimes been inconvenient,” Hendricks told the publication. “Having larger breasts has made it harder for me to shop throughout the years, but I’ve learned to love it.”

The Tennessee native added that she’s been blessed with a large bust and that anybody who suspects she’s undergone plastic surgery has had limited encounters with bosoms.

“It’s so bizarre that people are constantly asking if my breasts are real or fake,” Hendricks said. “They’re so obviously real that anyone who’s ever seen or touched a breast would know.”

But Hendricks doesn’t want her curves to make other females feel self-conscious or inadequate. When informed that breast augmentation in the UK has soared because British women want to resemble Hendricks, the actress said, “I hope I’m not encouraging that. If there’s anything to be learned from me it’s that I’m learning to celebrate what I was born with, even though it’s sometimes been inconvenient.”

Bob Dylan Interview Tapes Reveal Singer's Heroin Addiction

Bob DylanBob Dylan had to overcome a heroin habit in the early '60s, a previously unheard interview with the singer has revealed.

Dylan, who turns 70 on Tuesday, May 24, speaks candidly about becoming addicted to heroin whilst living in New York, BBC News reports.

The singer confesses to his journalist friend Robert Shelton, "I kicked a heroin habit in New York City. I got very, very strung out for a while, I mean really, very strung out. And I kicked the habit. I had about a $25-a-day habit and I kicked it."

Recorded in March 1966 on board Dylan's private plane bound for Denver, Colo., Shelton describes the interview as a "kaleidoscopic monologue" and the interviewee as "twisting restlessly" throughout the flight.
Elsewhere on the tapes, the singer talks about how suicidal thoughts entered his thinking after being labelled a 'genius'. He says, "Death to me is nothing ... death to me means nothing as long as I can die fast. Many times I've known I could have been able to die fast, and I could have easily gone over and done it. I'll admit to having this suicidal thing ... but I came through this time."

Returning to the subject later in the interview, Dylan concludes, "I'm not the kind of cat that's going to cut off an ear if I can't do something. I'm the kind of cat that would just commit suicide. I'd shoot myself in the brain if things got bad. I'd jump from a window ... man, I would shoot myself. You know I can think about death, man, openly."

The tapes, which also include an interview once the pair arrived in Denver, are the subject of a film currently in production.

Important Milestone – Finds moved to IAA storage today

Today, we passed a very important milestone for the excavation project. A large shipment of finds from the excavation were moved to the IAA store rooms in Beth Shemesh. This can be done only when the final plates for an archaeological report are completely ready. As the first volume of the Safi excavations is about to go to press (YEAH!!!!), Joe, Amit, Merav and Shira (thanks!), and a team of movers, transferred the finds today.
Not only is this a great thing since it means that the volume (actually a double volume…) is almost out, we now have a lot of more room for all the finds from the more recent seasons!

P.S. For those interested, the full title of the forthcoming volume is:
Maeir, A. M. In press. Tell es-Safi/Gath I: Report on the 1996–2005 Seasons. Ägypten und Altes Testament 69. Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz.

Canadian Nexus S’ experiencing voice search bug?

A recent thread on the Google Support Forum has brought to light an issue with a small number of Canadian Nexus S devices. But first, a bit of background. On an Android device, by default, when you hold down the Search button for a second or so, it activates the Voice Search function where you can ‘Call Mom’ or ‘Search sushi Toronto.” It’s usually a very useful function, especially when driving.

These affected Nexus S’, however, are experiencing the Voice Search function activating at random times, often going into a loop that causes other buttons to stop responding, at which point the only solution is to pull the battery or force a restart. Several theories exist to explain the cause, most of which revolve around 3G radio functionality. The latest Android OS version 2.3.4 has not resolved the issue and some users say an unauthorized radio update has reduced the occurrence.

A Google employee has taken the concern to the Android team, but as of now there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason to explain the phenomenon. The only permanent “solution” at this point is to turn off 3G functionality, something that would render the phone useless for Bell and Telus users, and cripplingly slow for Rogers customers.

Are you experiencing the issue? Hit up the thread below for more information and let us know in the comments!
